Here we are, trying to make sense out of mental training for golf. Let’s start by me saying I’m a skeptic and that has been a healthy thing for me over the years. I am also an optimist and yes, the two conflict at times. Let’s proceed anyway – just slowly.

Mental Training

Well, now we’ve let the proverbial cat out of the bag! Mental training for golf has to start with a discussion on mental training. If you stop for a long moment and close your eyes – I mean really – what happens? Maybe the darkness is there or maybe the problems of the day immediately show themselves – the faces and places and ponderings – they are all there in an instant.

This is what lives in the mind – thoughts. It hardly matters what they are - new, pretty, crazy or ingenious. The point here is that the mind doesn’t seem to like a vacuum and will just pop another picture up to fill any void it finds. Faster than a speeding train the mind can launch an ad campaign or start to write a jingle or play. It might even offer mental training for golf, but probably not when you want it.

That’s the mind we have to train for successful golf

The Good News

The good news is that we can use these aspects of the mind to effect our mental training for golf. Oh good! After we have recognized that the mind runs here and there, the idea of focus and attention starts to become more important.

We come to find out that mental training for golf entails getting a little quiet, gathering our attention and applying it in a clear focussed way on our target – the game of golf.

We live in a consumer crazy society and people are only too happy to give us new tools and aids to accomplish our goals. But the underlying success with any of these devices still lies in understanding the principles of concentration and application – the nuts and bolts of mental training for golf.

Start slow and spend a little time watching the mind as an observer, as if it were separate from you. Once you identify its patterns, you can start to make adjustments. I hope you can at least get a picture of what this experi-mental training for golf is all about!
